Smock Top, Peasant Shirt, Petite Figure

You either love them or hate them, but on the high street at the moment you cannot escape them. They are tight on the shoulders and bust, and then billow out loose as they go over your stomach and hips. These tops, which come in a variety of colours and fabrics, seem set to stay for a while, with longer sleeved versions out as we head towards the autumn.

Love this Style

Those who are petite look best in these peasant style tops, as do those with a delicate bone structure. People with small shoulders, toned arms and a small bust will look great. These tops can hide a bit of a tummy which can be just what you need. If you are small then go for any fabric, including jersey. If you have a tummy, then go for a less clingy fabric. A good investment if bought in a neutral colour, worn with a pair of low waist jeans you can look casual but chic.

Hate the Smock Top

This is not a style of top that you can adapt to suit you, with either clothes or accessories, if you don’t suit them then you will have to put them back on the rail. Those who have wide or muscular shoulders and arms, and/or a large bust should forget it. These tops are not flattering for us who carry our weight on top. They are tight around your widest part and then go straight down from there, ignoring any beautiful curves you may have, doing you no favours. If you are top heavy stay away!
